‘THE SPOT’ TO REOPEN IN COMMERCE BANK PARK ON CITY ISLAND

Harrisburg, PA – Mayor Stephen R. Reed, the Harrisburg Senators baseball club, and Billy Kaldes – owner of The SPOT restaurant formerly located at the corner of N. 2nd and Walnut Streets – today announced plans to open ‘The SPOT at the Park’, a hot dog stand in Commerce Bank Park on Harrisburg’s City Island which will serve fans attending home games of the Harrisburg Senators.

‘The SPOT at the Park’ is slated to make its debut at the Harrisburg Senators’ Thursday, April 17, 2008, home game against the New Hampshire Fisher Cats. The first pitch of that game will be thrown at 6:05 p.m.

Mayor Reed said the announcement comes nearly eight months after The SPOT restaurant closed its doors following 70 years of service in the downtown. The SPOT restaurant became a mainstay for individuals of all walks of life during its decades-long existence and featured such menu items as the Spot Dog, the Junkyard Dog, and the Rendell Steak Burger.

‘The SPOT at the Park’, which will be located in the concession area just off third base, will feature many of The SPOT’s now-famous menu items, including the Spot Dog and the Jumbo Dog, as well as sodas and other beverages and snacks.

"We are delighted to bring The SPOT’s legendary hotdogs and other specialty menu items back to the City of Harrisburg," said Mayor Reed. "One could not ask for a more appropriate venue than Commerce Bank Park to reintroduce The SPOT to the area’s residents, visitors, and baseball fans alike. This announcement is a win-win for all involved."

"We’re glad to be a part of bringing an icon back to the City of Harrisburg," added Randy Whitaker, Harrisburg Senators General Manager.

Mayor Reed said that when the Kaldes family closed The SPOT restaurant last year, they registered the restaurant’s name in the hopes that they could set up concessions at not only Commerce Bank Park, but at other city-sponsored festivals and events.

"This seemed like an opportune time to bring The SPOT back to Harrisburg," said owner Billy Kaldes. "We have had quite a demand for The SPOT’s return since closing last year, and we hope that opening this stand will satisfy that demand and also bring more people to the ballpark."

Reed said plans for a more permanent food service stand for ‘The SPOT at the Park’ are in the works and may be incorporated into the planned upgrades and renovations to Commerce Bank Park.
