HARRISBURG BUREAU OF POLICE SEEKS RE-ACCREDITATION

Harrisburg, PA – Mayor Stephen R. Reed today said that a team of assessors from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA), will arrive on April 26, 2008 to determine how well the Harrisburg Bureau of Police continues to meet national law enforcement standards. Part of the process involves a public hearing, where members of the community are invited to offer comments on the Bureau’s ability to comply with the CALEA Standards.

Reed said verification by the team that the Harrisburg Bureau of Police meets CALEA’s standards is part of a voluntary process to retain national accreditation, a highly-prized recognition of law enforcement professional excellence.

Harrisburg was first nationally accredited in 1989 and has kept the status since. Of the more than 21,000 law enforcement agencies in the United States, only 600 have met CALEA’s standards, said Reed.

The team of assessors will hold a public hearing on Monday, April 28, 2008, at 7:00 p.m. in the Harrisburg City Council Chambers on the first floor of the City Government Center. Anyone who would like to provide comments but can’t make it to the meeting may call the team at 255-3077 between 1:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. on that date.

Telephone calls and appearances at the meeting are limited to ten minutes and must specifically address the Bureau’s ability to comply with CALEA standards. A copy of the standards is available for public view in Room 219 of the police station located at 123 Walnut Street.

Written comments on the Police Bureau’s ability to meet CALEA standards may be sent to CALEA at 10302 Eaton Place, Suite 100, Fairfax, VA, 22030-2215.

Accreditation is for three years. For more information on accreditation or CALEA, write the above address or call 1-800-368-3757.
