MAYOR REED WELCOMES INTERNATIONAL HOUSE STUDENTS TO HARRISBURG

Harrisburg, PA – Mayor Stephen R. Reed and the International House today officially welcomed the residential complex’s spring class of nearly 60 students from over a dozen countries around the world.

Mayor Reed made a brief presentation to students tonight in the Hardwood Lounge at International House, located at 320 Chestnut Street, and answered questions about his role as Mayor of the City of Harrisburg. A variety of students and interns from International House, Messiah College’s Harrisburg Institute, HACC, Penn State Harrisburg, the State System of Higher Education and The Harrisburg University of Science and Technology attended the event.

"Harrisburg is truly an international City that welcomes students and visitors from all over the world on a regular basis," said Mayor Reed. "Since opening in 2002, International House has welcomed nearly 600 students from 60 different countries and six continents around the world."

International House, which celebrated its five year anniversary in August 2007, aims to provide a comfortable, friendly and supportive collegial residence for international and U.S. students, scholars and interns which allows them to meet one another and experience different cultures while enjoying all that the city has to offer. Since 2002, International House estimates that its residents have generated over $6 million of investment in the local economy based on an average of $50 per student per day. Much of this investment is with local retailers and small businesses in the downtown.

The highly-positive urban living experience, where everything students need is within walking distance of International House, often leads to a lifelong positive view of urban environments. Many of the students and interns living at International House gain a unique view of how city living can be an exciting and dynamic experience. Some of these U.S. students begin their careers in the City of Harrisburg and become permanent City residents after leaving International House.

International House, which is owned and operated by an affiliate of Harristown Development Corporation, has become a cultural hub and residential haven for students, interns and scholars, successfully transforming buildings along S. Third and Chestnut Streets into fully-functional residential spaces.
