HARRISBURG IN TOP 25 SCHOOL DISTRICTS IN STATE IN PERCENTAGE INCREASE IN ANNUAL TEST SCORES

Mayor Stephen R. Reed today released the information that Harrisburg School District ranks 25th of the 498 ranked Pennsylvania School districts in terms of percent improvement in PSSA test scores from 2002 to 2006. (Districts without high schools are not ranked.) These figures were made available today in a report taken from test data of the Pennsylvania Department of Education. .

CITY FIREFIGHTERS TO “FILL THE BOOT” IN FIGHT AGAINST MUSCULAR DYSTROPHY

Mayor Stephen R. Reed and officials from the Muscular Dystrophy Association and the International Association of Firefighters Local #428 today announced that city firefighters will again be conducting the “Fill-the-Boot” campaign this August, during which city firefighters voluntarily staff busy city intersections seeking donations for the fight against Muscular Dystrophy. .

Mayor Stephen R. Reed today announced that the City of Harrisburg’s 2007 American MusicFest Independence Weekend Celebration promises to be the most incredible music oriented event of the summer, with five days of free live musical, theatrical, children’s and creative performances on six stages throughout Riverfront Park, as well as Harrisburg Senators baseball games, martial arts and volleyball tournaments on City Island, festival amusements, foods, international crafts and fireworks displays. All are invited and attendance at the festival and all events are free.

JBOMB THREAT TO SCHOOL RESULTS IN TWO ARRESTS

Mayor Stephen R. Reed today reported that a bomb threat was telephoned to the Rowland School at 19th & Derry Streets at 12:26 p.m. today, resulting in the evacuation of the school.

Mayor Stephen R. Reed today announced the opening of a new ice cream parlor in the city’s downtown, offering a full array of Hershey’s hand-dipped ice cream, Italian ice, soft serve ice cream, sundaes, milk shakes, ice cream sodas, ice cream cones and specialty desserts such as brownies, fruit cobblers and strawberry shortcake ala mode.

CITY SUMMER RECREATION PROGRAM TO BEGIN AT 14 CITY PLAYGROUNDS AND 3 SWIMMING FACILITIES

Mayor Stephen R. Reed today announced the city’s Summer Recreation Program, which will be offering daily activities, free lunches, field trips and more for city youth. All activities get underway beginning on June 18, and run through August 10 at 14 city playgrounds and 3 city swimming facilities. The program serves an estimated 5,000 city children each day.
