All activities get underway beginning on June 18, and run through August 10 at 14 city playgrounds and 3 city swimming facilities. The program serves an estimated 5,000 city children each day.

Reed said the city’s Summer Rec. Program, this year themed “Remembering and Honoring Our History”, is free and open to all city youth. Children need only show up at any of the conveniently located program sites to participate, where free lunches provided by the Harrisburg School District are served to all participating youth. The program will operate through mid-August at Morrison Park(Cameron & Herr Sts.), 4th & Dauphin, Penn & Dauphin, 4th and Emerald, Gorgas(Jefferson & Columbia Sts.), Vernon Street, Cloverly Heights(18th & Pemberton), 14th & Shoop, Penn National Insurance Playground(Pool #2 – end of S. 18th St.), Reservoir Park(Walnut St. entrance), Norwood(rear of 200 block of S. 20th St.), Pleasantview(19th & Forster Sts.), Wilson Park(Rumson Drive) and Summit Terrace (Summit & King Streets).

The Mayor said each day’s programming offers arts & crafts, games, fitness, golf, swimming, dancing, 10 sports and cultural camps, track, soccer, fishing, social skills, spelling Bees and much more. In addition to daily activities, field trips are offered to The National Civil War Museum, Harrisburg Senators Baseball Games, the Baltimore Black in Wax Museum, the World African Museum, Olympic Skating Rink, Red Crown Bowling Center, Lake Tobias Animal Park, and much, much more.

One of the highlights of this year’s programming will be performances by world famous musician Paula Larke, who brings her inspirational and motivational message to the city in free performances slated for July 1-4 on the riverfront during the American Musicfest, and then on city playgrounds from July 9-13.

Reed also said that also returning this year are Outdoor Movie Nights with Pictures in the Park, featuring family-oriented movies under the stars at the Levitt Pavilion in Reservoir Park. Featured films for the free events include “Happy Feet”- June 30; “Dream Girls” Night Talent Contest and Movie – July 28; and “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone” – August 11, with musical talent The Moaning Myrtles.

Reed said both of the city’s swimming pools will open to the public June 16th with learn-to-swim programs being conducted at both pools. City pools are open Mondays through Fridays from Noon to 6 p.m., and weekends and holidays from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. City Island Beach, which opened to the public on Memorial Day weekend, will be open weekends only until June 16th from 1 p.m. – 7 p.m. After that, the City Island Beach will be open 7 days per week Monday through Friday from Noon to 6 p.m. and weekends and holidays from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m.

The Mayor said that in addition to the youth recreational programming, a variety of adult programming is also offered at free or nominal charge, including the Harrisburg Open Tennis Tournament, Adult Volleyball League, and a Women’s Summer Basketball League(sanctioned by NCAA).

“The city’s summer recreation program provides a safe, nurturing, educational and supervised environment for children of all ages,” said the Mayor. “Plus, we are able to provide a free daily lunch that helps ensure proper nutrition during the summer months, all at no cost to participating youth or their parents.”
