THE OFFICE OF MAYOR STEPHEN R. REED |
FOR IMMEDIATE USE |
POLICE INVESTIGATE BABY INJURY AND SEPARATE POSSIBLE DRUG OVERDOSE DEATH; SUSPECTS ALSO SOUGHT IN SUNDAY ROBBERY THAT LEFT VICTIM SERIOUSLY INJUREDMayor Stephen R. Reed today said city police are investigating a suspicious death that occurred on Monday involving a possible drug overdose, and are also looking into a case involving an 11-month old child in critical condition at Hershey Medical Center. Police are also looking for two suspects in the robbery of a man in the Uptown on Sunday evening. The Mayor said city police are investigating the suspicious death of 38-year old Stephanie Wright, no known address, who was found deceased at a home in the 1900 block of N. 2nd Street on Monday afternoon. Initial witness reports indicate the victim, who is diabetic, had been on a crack cocaine binge for several days prior to her death and had neglected her daily insulin shots. Police have yet to determine the actual time of her death as it appears she was left lying dead by occupants who thought she was just sleeping. The resident of the apartment and at least two other persons were in and out of the apartment throughout the day, reportedly stepping over Wright’s prone body several times before calling police. All had been using crack cocaine for several days prior to Wright’s death. Reed said city police are also investigating a robbery that left a 34-year old city man with a serious head injury. The victim was helping a friend move in the 3100 block of N. 2nd Street just after 7 p.m. when he was attacked by two black males, one of whom struck him on the head with a wooden baseball bat. The victim, sustained a fractured skull in the attack. The robbers escaped with his wallet containing a small mount of cash and credit cards. The suspects are described as two black males, both about 6’ tall and wearing black hooded sweatshirts and dark colored pants. Neither suspect spoke during the attack. The Mayor said anyone with information about any of the cases is urged to call city police at (717) 255.3131. Reed said city police are also investigating a case involving an 11-month old child brought to Harrisburg Hospital on Monday morning. The child went into seizures just after 9 a.m. at the McMullen Daycare in the 2600 block of Derry Street in S. Allison Hill. Physicians at Harrisburg Hospital who examined the baby initially thought it may have been a case of “shaken baby syndrome” as the infant appeared to have extensive blood on the brain. The child was transferred to Hershey Medical Center for emergency brain surgery and doctors now believe he may be suffering from a brain tumor and that suspicions of abuse are unfounded. In other crime news, Reed said police have now charged 24-year old Tameika Jackson, of the 2400 block of N. 6th Street, with multiple counts related to the Roebuck’s bar fight which preceded the fatal shooting of 21-year old Joseph Seegars early last Saturday morning. Jackson started the large brawl by striking another woman over the head with a bottle. She is not charged with anything related to Seeger’s death, but has had Aggravated Assault, Disorderly Conduct, Causing a Riot, Hindering Apprehension and Unsworn Falsification charges lodged against her. The Mayor said police continue to look for Seegar’s killer, who has been identified as 25-year old Kevin W. Murden, of Swatara Township. Originally from New York City, Murden may have fled back to New York after the killing. Police are looking for two persons of interest in the case for questioning, with both named Darryl Pierce. Reed said an intensive investigation remains underway in the case. |
