CITY TRICK OR TREAT NIGHT SET FOR THURSDAY, OCTOBER 26, FROM 6-8 P.M.Mayor Stephen R. Reed reminds city residents that Trick or Treat Night in Harrisburg and most of Dauphin County’s other municipalities will be held on Thursday, October 26, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The date and time for the fun-filled evening is annually set by the Dauphin County Chiefs of Police Association. Mayor Reed said Trick or Treat Night can be one of the most enjoyable experiences of the year for children if parents or responsible adults follow some basic guidelines to help ensure their safety. o DO NOT go alone – have a parent, older sibling or responsible adult accompany younger trick or treaters o DO NOT go inside houses, even if invited, or cut across yards or driveways o CARRY a flashlight and APPROACH only lighted houses, with property owners wishing to participate encouraged to turn on their front porch lights o MAKE sure costumes have reflective markings or tape, that they don’t drag on the ground, and avoid wearing masks or hoods --- for better visibility, use washable make-up instead o STAY on sidewalks, or if there is no sidewalk, walk on the left hand side of the road or street facing traffic, and always look both ways before crossing streets o INSPECT all candies before allowing children to eat them The Mayor highlighted the final guideline, and encouraged parents or guardians to carefully examine all of the items that their children may bring home and make sure none appear to have been tampered with or otherwise opened. “While incidents of tampering are very rare, they can and do occur,” Reed said. “Parents can prevent harm to their children from such acts by simply examining the candies they bring home. If the package is opened or torn it should be discarded, and even if the package is secure, each of the candies should also be examined once it is opened to ensure that no foreign objects have been inserted into them. “Under no circumstances should children eat any of the candy they receive before they return home and parents or guardians have a chance to examine the items they received.” |
