SUSPECTS SOUGHT IN SEPARATE ROBBERIES; 9 OTHERS ARRESTED IN ROBBERY, THEFT, GUN AND DRUG CRIMES

Mayor Stephen R. Reed today said city police continue to search for suspects wanted in connection with the robbery of the Belco Community Credit Union on Monday morning, and for the October 6 robbery of the Family Dollar Store. 9 suspects have also been arrested in connection with separate robbery, theft, shooting and drug-related crimes in the city over the past week.

Reed said city police continue to search for suspects in separate city robberies, including the October 16th hold-up of the Belco Community Credit Union branch office in Harrisburg Hospital, and the October 6th stick-up of the Family Dollar Store at 400 S. Cameron Street.

The Mayor said the Belco robber is described as a thinly-built African American male, between 5’7” and 5’9” tall, wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and black pants. The armed suspect took an undisclosed amount of cash from the bank teller before fleeing on foot out the front door of the hospital lobby. He is likely left-handed and carrying a silver handgun. The teller was not injured and no shots were fired.

In the Family Dollar Store holdup, an Hispanic male, between 5’6” and 5’8” tall, weighing 165-180 lbs, and wearing black jeans, white shirt, dark jacket with grey shoulders, a red New York Yankees baseball cap and a long gold chain with a cross, walked into the store just after 5 p.m. on October 6th. The suspect waited until other customers had left the store and then produced a black handgun, which he pointed at the clerk and told him to open the cash register. The clerk did as he was told and the suspect grabbed money from the register’s drawer and fled on a bicycle towards Berryhill Street. The clerk was not injured and no shots were fired.

In other crime incidents, the Mayor reports that city police have arrested 48-year old Jervis Cunningham, of Philadelphia, on multiple counts of Theft from Autos following his October 2 arrest in downtown. Cunningham allegedly smashed in car windows to steal items from a vehicle parked near Walnut and River Streets sometime during the evening hours. The victim spotted the suspect as she parked, and later identified items in the suspect’s possession as being her’s. Cunningham also admitted to a rash of vehicle break-ins that occurred on September 14 in downtown, when he broke into 8 parked vehicles and took various items. The suspect now faces at least 9 counts each of Theft from Auto and Criminal Mischief. No one was injured during any of the break-ins.

Reed said police have also arrested 3 city juveniles in connection with an October 5th aggravated assault incident in the 2100 block of N. 4th Street, in which 19-year old Jesse Boyd, of Hershey was shot at and pistol whipped by the 3 teens. Boyd was allegedly burglarizing the home when he was confronted by several residents and their friends, who proceeded to beat him and then fired multiple shots at him as he ran away. Boyd has been charged with a single count of Carrying a Firearm without a License, and may face additional charges. A 14-year old juvenile of the burglarized residence has been charged with single counts each of Possession of Drugs and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. A 17-year old juvenile from the burglarized residence has been charged with single counts each of Aggravated Assault, Reckless Endangerment, Possession of a Firearm by a Minor, Possession of an Instrument of Crime, Possession of Marijuana, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. Another 17-year old suspect, a resident of the 600 block of Schuylkill Street, has been charged with a single count of Possession of Drug Paraphernalia and he was also charged with violating his probation on an unrelated previous conviction.

The Mayor said city police have charged 18-year old Stephen M. Slaughter, of the 400 block of Muench Street, with a single count of Possession with Intent to Deliver following his arrest in the 2100 block of N. 4th Street on October 7, just before 6 p.m. Also charged in the incident are a 15-year old juvenile from the 2400 block of Adrian Street, charged with single counts each of Possession of Drug Paraphernalia and Possession of Alcohol, and a 13-year old juvenile, from the 600 block of Schuylkill Street, charged with a single count of Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. The three were observed by a city police officer on a front porch of a home that is known as a drug haven. Officers found drug scales and packaging materials on the three.

Police have also arrested 27-year old Daniel Chacon, of the 200 block of S. 15th Street, in connection with the armed robbery of two Susquehanna Township residents just after 5 a.m. on October 10. The couple, a 36-year old man and a 39-year old woman, were waiting for a bus near N. 6th and Kelker Streets when Chacon pulled up in his vehicle, showed a handgun to the pair and demanded cash. He escaped with $20. The victims were able to get his license plate number and provided it to responding officers, who quickly determined the vehicle was Chacon’s and he was taken into custody without incident at his home. Chacon now faces single counts each of Robbery and Conspiracy to Commit Robbery, and he was also charged with a detainer from a previous incident.

The Mayor said city police are also investigating two overnight incidents, involving a burglary and a separate home invasion incident.

Someone entered the Open Stage of Harrisburg offices in the 200 block of Walnut Street sometime after 10:30 p.m. last night and took a laptop computer and a small amount of candy money. No point of entry was found and police believe the suspect may have remained in the offices after they were closed last night.

City police are also investigating an alleged home invasion robbery that occurred just before Midnight last night in the 1700 block of Paxton Street. A 36-year old female resident and her 1-year old child answered a knock at the back door, which she believed was a neighbor, when three male suspects entered and pointed a gun at her. The robbers demanded money but the victim had none to give and they instead took her cellphone. The victim and her child were uninjured.

The suspects are described as a Hispanic male, an African American male with a “chubby” build and a green bandana over his face, and an Asian male dressed all in white. Police believe at least one of the suspects are known to the victims.

Anyone with information in the overnight cases is urged to call city police at (717) 255.3131.
