OVERNIGHT ROBBERY & VANDALISM SUSPECTS ARRESTED; SUSPECT SOUGHT IN ASSAULT ON WOMAN ON BU

Mayor Stephen R. Reed today announced that city police have arrested two men in connection with an armed robbery that occurred early this morning in the 300 block of Hummel Street, as well as a suspect in a separate vandalism incident. Police are also searching for a female assault suspect who roughed up a woman riding on a city bus yesterday.

In the robbery case, Reed said three victims were confronted and robbed at gunpoint in the 300 block of Hummel Street shortly after 3:00 a.m. this morning, with both suspects quickly arrested by city police. A 19-year old female, 19-year old male and an 18-year old male were allegedly just sitting in their vehicle when they were confronted by three black males, one of whom was armed with a handgun, and ordered to give up their cash. The robbers took the woman’s purse after punching her in the face. She did not require medical treatment for her injuries.

Arriving police units began to search the area for the suspects when a neighbor who witnessed the robbery advised them of the whereabouts of one of the suspects. The other was quickly located nearby and both were subsequently taken into custody. Now under arrest are 28-year old Edward B. Barnes, of the 1400 block of Berryhill Street, and 28-year old Daniel B. Lugo, of the 1200 block of S. 21st Street. Barnes is being charged with single counts each of Robbery, Conspiracy, Possession of Drugs, Defiant Trespass and Loitering and Prowling, and was also wanted for an outstanding warrant for violating parole. Lugo has been charged with Simple Assault, Robbery, Conspiracy, Defiant Trespass and Loitering and Prowling. One of the weapons used in the robbery was recovered by police near where Barnes was hiding.

Reed said police last night also arrested 25-year old Daryl Moore, of the 1600 block of Catherine Street, on multiple charges stemming from multiple acts of vandalism last night. Moore and an unidentified accomplice were observed knocking over trash cans, breaking Halloween pumpkins, and causing other damage during a spree that began in the 1300 block of Penn Street and continued until his capture in the 2000 block. Moore is now charged with single counts each of Disorderly Conduct, Public Drunkenness, Possession of an Offensive Weapon (large knife) and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia (crack pipe).

The Mayor said city police are also investigating an assault of a city woman riding a Cat bus yesterday afternoon. The 51-year old victim, a resident of the 1300 block of N. 5th Street, sustained shoulder, head and arm injuries and remains hospitalized today, though her condition is good and none of the injuries are life-threatening. Witness reports indicate the victim began arguing with another female passenger near 6th and Verbeke Streets. The victim was pushed by the assailant from the top step of the bus out the door and down onto the street. The suspect is described as a black female, approximately 5’10” tall, wearing a black shirt and jeans.
