NEW DIRECTOR APPOINTED FOR NATIONAL CIVIL WAR MUSEUM

Mayor Stephen R. Reed and The National Civil War Museum Board of Directors Chairman Thomas Bell today announced that Janice I. Mullin has been named as new Museum Director for the facility. She began her duties in late August.

Reed said Mullin is an area native who was instrumental in establishing the Internationally-acclaimed Churchill Museum in London, a part of the United Kingdom’s prestigious Imperial War Museum. Mullin grew up in nearby Steelton and attained her Bachelor of Arts degree from Wilson College in Chambersburg. She received her Masters degree in Museum Studies from the University of Leicester in London.

The Mayor said Mullin, prior to her eight years in London, worked in the photographic archive of the U.S. Navy Museum in Washington D.C. as a licensing manager. She has worked extensively in museum marketing, membership development and promotion, and brings a wide array of museum operations experience to her new post.

Reed said Mullin replaces former Director George Hicks, who retired earlier this year due to declining health, and becomes only the second director in the history of the national-class museum in Reservoir Park.

“Janice Mullin brings a wealth of experience and accomplishment to her new position,” said Mayor Reed, “and we are very fortunate to have her take over managerial duties for the National Civil War Museum. We hope her success in London in helping to establish the world renowned Churchill Museum will be repeated here.”

“With its fantastic building, beautiful location and incredibly impressive collection of artifacts, I am delighted to be a part of The National Civil War Museum, said Mullin. “We in Central Pennsylvania should take great pride in our wonderful museum, which tells a story of national importance and international interest. I am thrilled to have the opportunity to work here and to be back in my hometown. I am deeply honored to have been chosen to serve as its new Director.”

“It is our aim to raise the profile of the museum both locally and nationally; to strengthen ties and build partnerships with area businesses, museums and attractions; and most importantly, to continually strive to improve what we have to offer to both our local community and out of state visitors.”
