WOMAN ARRESTED FOR THREE HOLD-UPS SINCE YESTERDAY
Mayor Stephen R. Reed this afternoon said that Harrisburg police have arrested a woman wanted in connection with the robberies of three downtown businesses over the last 24 hours. She was taken into custody in Strawberry Square just after her second attempted robbery today.

STATE FUNDING TO PAY FOR 5 NEW CITY POLICE OFFICERS
Mayor Stephen R. Reed today announced that the city will hire 5 new police officers, thanks to a Police on Patrol grant awarded to the city by Governor Ed Rendell.

CIVIL WAR TRAILS LEAD TO NATIONAL CIVIL WAR MUSEUM IN HARRISBURG THIS WEEKEND; PUBLIC INVITED TO SERIES OF EVENTS & ACTIVITIES
Mayor Stephen R. Reed today invited residents and visitors alike to the City of Harrisburg and the National Civil War Museum for a series of special events and activities entitled Civil War Trails Discovery Weekend, which will highlight Harrisburg’s critical role as the “Crossroads of the Union” during the American Civil War (1861-65). Festivities begin this Friday night and run through Sunday evening, September 22 to 24.

NEW DIRECTOR APPOINTED FOR NATIONAL CIVIL WAR MUSEUM
Mayor Stephen R. Reed and The National Civil War Museum Board of Directors Chairman Thomas Bell today announced that Janice I. Mullin has been named as new Museum Director for the facility. She began her duties in late August.

33 ARRESTED ON BURGLARY, ROBBERY, ASSAULTS, DRUG SALES AND MORE; SUSPECTS SOUGHT IN OVERNIGHT SHOOTINGS, CAR BREAK-INS
Mayor Stephen R. Reed today announced the arrests of 33 suspects wanted for recent criminal incidents in the city ranging from illegal drug purchases to robberies, assaults and more. The Mayor also said city police are searching for suspects in two separate shootings and a series of car break-ins that occurred overnight, and for suspects in a shooting that occurred this past Sunday morning.

BANK ROBBER TAKEN INTO CUSTODY; FELON WANTED IN NEW YORK ALSO ARRESTED
Mayor Stephen R. Reed today announced that Harrisburg Police have arrested 17-year old Justin Bryant, of N. Summit Street, who was being sought by Swatara Township police on bank robbery charges. Police also arrested 17-year old Gale Green Jr., who is wanted in New York on weapons law violations.

CITY FISHING DERBY SET FOR SEPT. 16, 17 & 18 AT JACKSON LICK POOL
Mayor Stephen R. Reed today announced that the City of Harrisburg’s Eighth Annual “Get Hooked on Fishing Derby” will be held at the Jackson-Lick Pool at 1201 N. 6th Street during the weekend of September 16-18, 2006. The popular free fishing derby is open to youth only on Saturday, September 16, with families, seniors and special needs groups permitted on Sunday and Monday, September 17 and 18. .

KIPONA FESTIVAL UPDATE
Mayor Stephen R. Reed this afternoon said that the majority of Kipona Festival events and activities will occur as scheduled, although most of the river-based events are being cancelled because of projected rises in the river levels. Weather and river forecasters are now saying the Susquehanna River may rise to 14 ft. by Monday morning, which would have some impact on City Island facilities. The river’s rise is not expected to have any impact on the fireworks display, which is still set for Sunday night at 8:35 p.m. .

CITY WATER RATE INCREASE ADOPTED; AVERAGE HOMEOWNER BILL TO RISE SLIGHTLY BY $4 PER MONTH
Citing significant shortfalls in water use, the Harrisburg Authority yesterday adopted a 13.5 percent rate increase that takes effect immediately beginning today. The increase means a household of four persons will see their bill rise by an average of $4.04 per month.
