Mayor Stephen R. Reed today announced the arrests of 7 persons for a variety of city crimes, including arson, assault, gun and drug related crimes, burglary and more.

o Jose Manuel Ortiz, age 54, of Hunter Street, has been charged with one count each of Burglary, Arson and Risking Catastrophe for setting fire to 124 Evergreen Street early Wednesday morning. Known on the street as Jose Loco, Ortiz had been evicted from the home after it was sold to a new owner. The blaze caused moderate damage to 124 Evergreen, and major damage to the adjoining 126 Evergreen Street. One city firefighter sustained a minor eye injury fighting the blaze.

o Brandin B. Venable, age 23, of Swatara Street, and Brandon L. Ruiz, age 22, of Woodbury, New Jersey, were charged with stolen firearms possession and other counts after a September 13, 2006 traffic stop on Swatara Street. Police found two stolen handguns hidden underneath the passenger seat of the vehicle they were in.

o Eric King, age 23, of Rolleston Street, has been charged with multiple firearms violations and other counts after a September 14, 2006 shooting incident in Hall Manor. King opened fire on two men after an argument and is now charged with single counts each of Aggravated Assault, Reckless Endangerment, Criminal Mischief, Carrying a Firearm without A License, Driving without a License, Driving Under Suspension, and Illegal Discharge of a Firearm.

o Lyle Folks, age 25, of Briggs Street, has been charged with single counts each of Carrying a Firearm without a License, Possession with intent to Deliver Marijuana and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia after police stopped him in the 500 block of N. 20th Street on September 15, 2006. Folks had a loaded firearm and five bags of marijuana on him at the time of his arrest.

o Carlo Cobb, age 42, no permanent address, has been charged with Indecent Exposure, Open Lewdness and Disorderly Conduct after police received a citizen’s complaint about a man performing a lewd act on the street near N. 3rd and Peffer Streets. Arriving officers found Cobb still performing the act.

o Ronald Robertson, age 43, no permanent address, was charged with a single count of Burglary after police observed him exiting 1620 Park Street through a side window on September 24, 2006. Roberston was stealing building materials and supplies and had a pile stacked stacked outside the window when police spotted him.

Police continue to look for a suspect wanted in connection with the shooting and robbery of a 32-year old man on S. 13th Street that occurred just after 1 p.m. on September 22, 2006. The Middletown man was walking south on 13th Street when a black male in his early 20’s, 5’6” tall, medium build and wearing a brown long-sleeve shirt with a hood and a brown hat. The suspect, who may have a Jamaican accent, approached the victim and told him to give up his valuables. The victim thought the weapon displayed by the robber was a toy gun and refused, and the suspect fired once, striking him in the stomach. The injury was not life-threatening.
