KIPONA DRAG BOAT & CANOE RACES CANCELLED, BARGES BEING REMOVED

While 98% of the multitude of Kipona activities are set to unfold this weekend, Mayor Stephen R. Reed today reported that projected Susquehanna River level rises coming this weekend, as a result of expected major rainfall in a large part of the river basin, have resulted in a decision by the drag boat and canoe race sponsoring organizations to cancel their respective races that were set for the Kipona Festival on Saturday, September 2, and Monday, Sept. 4. All of Kipona’s other events and activities are occurring as scheduled, though some are being relocated to other areas of the waterfront.

ADDITIONAL TEST SCORE DATA RELEASED FOR SCHOOLS

SUSPECT ARRESTED IN SHOOTING OF U.S. MARINE; OTHER ROBBERY SUSPECTS TAKEN INTO CUSTODY

Mayor Stephen R. Reed today said city police have arrested 20- year old Daniel Quinones, of the first block of Evergreen Street, on multiple charges connected with his shooting of a U.S. Marine home on leave on August 14 near Mulberry and Hummel Streets. Quinones has now been charged with Attempted Homicide, Aggravated Assault and weapons law violations in connection with the shooting.

20 ARRESTED ON VARIOUS ROBBERY, BURGLARY, SHOOTING & OTHER CRIMES; OTHER SUSPECTS ALSO BEING SOUGHT

Mayor Stephen R. Reed today announced the arrests of 20 suspects wanted in connection with a wide array of criminal offenses ranging from near fatal shootings to armed robberies, burglaries, drug sales and other offenses. Police are also searching for suspects in several different crimes for which the public’s assistance is being requested.

RIVER E-COLI LEVELS AGAIN CLOSE CITY ISLAND BEACH

Mayor Stephen R. Reed today said the City Island Beach is once again closed to the public due to elevated E-coli levels. Results of the city’s latest water quality tests, taken on Monday, show that the levels have again risen above the state’s maximum quality level of 235 colonies per 100 milliliters, to 560 colonies.

HEALTHCARE COMPANIES FUND DENTAL & PREVENTIVE HEALTH CARE PROGRAM FOR CITY STUDENTS

Mayor Stephen R. Reed and Aaron Walton, Chairman of the Highmark Foundation and Gateway Health Plan, today announced that Harrisburg city school students will receive free in-school dental and health care services as part of a 2-year demonstration project being undertaken by the city, school district, Highmark Foundation, Gateway Health Plan, Hamilton Health Center and United Concordia Companies. The innovative effort is designed to show that improved health and dental care services for children can help to improve academic achievement.

NEW STATE TESTING REPORT SHOWS CITY SCHOOLS MAKING SUBSTANTIAL PROGRESS

Mayor Stephen R. Reed today said the newly-released scores on the Pennsylvania System for Statewide Assessment (PSSA) tests for Harrisburg city schools show continuing improvement that he calls “heartening and indicative of further gains but, without hesitation, there is much more to do.”

RAPE, ROBBERY & SHOOTING SUSPECTS SOUGHT IN SEPARATE INCIDENTS; 2 ARRESTED FOR FIGHTING WITH POLICE; FRONT ST. FIRE CAUSED BY OVERLOADED ELECTRIC POWER STRIP

Mayor Stephen R. Reed today said city police are searching for multiple suspects in connection with a late Monday night shooting and two robberies and a rape that occurred overnight in the city. Two suspects have also been charged with fighting with police in a separate incident, and city fire officials have determined the cause of a late afternoon Front Street fire to be electrical in nature.
