NEW BOOK HONORS STATE CIVIL WAR UNIT & MEDAL OF HONOR WINNERS

Mayor Stephen R. Reed today lauded the efforts of author John Stuart Richards during book release ceremonies at The National Civil War Museum for his new tome “A History of Company C – 50th Pennsylvania Veteran Volunteer Infantry Regiment”… From The Camp, The Battlefield and the Prison Pen 1861- 1865. The book features interwoven narratives of Medal of Honor winners Captain Charles E. Brown and Henry Hill, and POW Corporal John Doudle.

Reed said the new book was exhaustively researched by Richards and brings to life the storied history of the Pennsylvania Volunteers’ Company C, many of whom hailed from nearby Schuylkill County. The story follows the men from their work as coal miners and canal boaters in Schuylkill County to training camp, battles, and internment at the infamous Andersonville Confederate prison camp, providing a first-person account of their daily struggles and life at war.

“This is a terrific new book that highlights the bravery and courage of the common soldier during the Civil War,” said Mayor Reed. “Through personal reflections, authentic soldiers’ letters and many years of research, John has interwoven a story of ordinary soldiers that captures the imagination of readers. This is a must read for anyone interested in history or the Civil War.”

The Mayor accepted copies of the new book from Richards for placement in The National Civil War Museum’s research library.

Reed said Richards is a native Pennsylvanian who currently works at the Susquehanna Depot in New Cumberland. A U.S. Air Force veteran who served in Vietnam, Richards has is an accomplished published author of three other historical books, including “Early Coal Mining in the Anthracite Region” – Arcadia Press, “Pennsylvanian Voices of The Great War” – McFarland Press, and “Miners, Drivers and Spraggers” – Coal Hole Press. In addition to his literary accomplishments, Richards also lectures on military and coal mining history, and is a Civil War reenactor, as well as a member of the coal mining living history tribute group “The Breaker Boys.” Richards also conducts tours of the Pioneer Coal Mine in nearby Ashland, PA.

The Mayor said Richard’s new “A History of Company C – 50th Pennsylvania Veteran Volunteer Infantry Regiment”…From the Camp, The Battlefield and the Prison Pen 1861-1865, is available at most major chain bookstores, including Walden Books, Borders and Barnes and Noble, and it also available online at Amazon.com and HistoryPress.com.
