MIDTOWN BURGLAR & 3 ROBBERY SUSPECTS ARRESTED

Mayor Stephen R. Reed today announced that city police have arrested three persons on multiple robbery charges, and a fourth suspect wanted for a series of Midtown burglaries has now also been taken into custody.

ROBBERY SUSPECT ARRESTED IN S. ALLISON HILL LAST NIGHT; BURGLARY & MUGGING & ESCAPE ALSO BEING INVESTIGATED

Mayor Stephen R. Reed today said city police have arrested 19-year old Marc Thomas, of the first block of N. 12th Street, on multiple robbery and other charges stemming from an incident last night near 19th and Swatara Streets, where a S.19th Street man was robbed by Thomas at gunpoint. Thomas was captured after a lengthy foot chase by police near 17th & Derry Streets.

BUDGET REDUCTIONS UNDERTAKEN, NO LAYOFFS EXPECTED; EARLY CHILDHOOD PROGRAM TO REMAIN

Mayor Stephen R. Reed today announced that major budget reductions are being undertaken in the Harrisburg School District to cut $5.4 million in expenditures for the school fiscal year which began July 1st.

PRIDE PARADE FORCES CLOSURE OF MANY DOWNTOWN STREETS SATURDAY MORNING FROM 8 A.M. TO NOON

Many downtown streets will be closed throughout Saturday morning to accommodate the Pride Festival Parade, Mayor Stephen R. Reed said today, and motorists are urged to avoid the downtown area if they are not attending the parade or festival. Streets will begin closing at 8 a.m. for the 10 a.m. to Noon parade, including Front Street from Forster south to Paxton Street, which will dramatically impact westbound traffic, as well as motorists trying to access I-83 in south Harrisburg.

RIVER SEARCHED AFTER LATE NIGHT REPORT OF PERSON IN WATER

Mayor Stephen R. Reed today said that city emergency response units were called to the river early this morning after witnesses reported seeing a man floating in midstream and calling for help. Crews searched until early this morning without finding a victim.

23 ADDITIONAL SUSPECTS ARRESTED ON ROBBERY, BURGLARY& OTHER CHARGES

Mayor Stephen R. Reed today reported the arrests of 14 adults and 9 juveniles on robbery, burglary, firearms violations, drug, assault and other charges in connection with city robberies and burglaries dating back to last year, with nearly all of them being repeat offenders. The arrests are the result of on-going police saturation operations and investigations.

ARRESTS MADE IN SERIES OF CITY ROBBERIES & HOME INVASIONS

Mayor Stephen R. Reed today announced that city police have arrested ten different individuals in connection with eight different robberies and home invasions that occurred over the past two months. The suspects include four adults and six juveniles, including two 14-year olds and a 15-year old.

KILLER ARRESTED IN SATURDAY MURDER

Mayor Stephen R. Reed this afternoon announced that city police have arrested 35-year old Martin Aquino in connection with the Saturday, July 15, shooting death of Jesus Castaneda, age 30, of Harrisburg. Aquino is now being processed by city police and will be remanded to Dauphin County prison on no bail, facing one count each of Homicide and Robbery.

RESCUERS IN 2005 CITY FIRE RECOGNIZED BY CARNEGIE HERO FUND

Two men who rescued a man from his burning city home were honored with one of the nation’s highest awards for heroism, Mayor Stephen R. Reed said today during presentation ceremonies conducted by the city and the Carnegie Hero Fund of Pittsburgh. Recognized with the prestigious Carnegie Medal honors are Nic Barrelet and Randy Nolen, who rescued Juancio Irizarry from his burning home in the 600 block of Boyd Street on January 28, 2005.
