“THE QUARTER” ENTERTAINMENT COMPLEX ADDS NEW ORLEANS FLAIR TO DOWNTOWN

Downtown’s vibrant Restaurant Row was significantly enhanced today as Mayor Stephen R. Reed cut the ribbon to officially open “The Quarter”, a major new dining and entertainment complex at 321 N. 2nd Street. The magnificent 4-story complex reflects New Orleans’ famed Bourbon Street décor and atmosphere, and becomes the largest nightspot in downtown Harrisburg.

CITY STORE CLERK KILLED IN OVERNIGHT ROBBERY

A store clerk was shot to death during an early morning robbery at the City Gas and Diesel store at 1549 State Street, Mayor Stephen R. Reed today reported. 23-year old Hitender Thakur of India, died instantly after being shot in the chest during the 1:15 a.m. robbery.

NEW CITY ISLAND BOAT LAUNCH OPENED; MARKET STREET BRIDGE AND ISLAND RAMP IMPROVEMENTS SOON COMPLETED

A wave of City Island improvements are done and others are nearing completion, Mayor Stephen R. Reed announced today during ribbon cutting activities for the new City Island Boat Launch, which replaces the smaller, damaged public boating access ramp on the southwestern side of City Island. Also expected to be completed in the next two weeks are major new improvements to the Market Street Bridge across City Island, and the Bridge underpass and ramps leading onto the Island.

COMPREHENSIVE CITY TOURISM STUDY AND MASTER PLAN NOW COMPLETED

Mayor Stephen R. Reed and officials from the National Trust for Historic Preservation today unveiled the city’s new comprehensive Tourism Plan, which outlines an extensive array of tourism product, visitor service and marketing recommendations for the city. The Study is the result of nearly 18 months of effort by the city and the National Trust.

CITY ATTAINS HIGHEST RATING IN STATE FOR FLOOD DAMAGE CONTROL; RESULTS IN 20% DISCOUNT FOR CITY FLOOD INSURANCE USERS

Flood insurance buyers in Harrisburg will receive a 20% discount in the premiums they pay thanks to the ongoing flood preparation and prevention efforts of the City of Harrisburg, Mayor Stephen R. Reed announced today as he reported that Harrisburg has achieved a Class 6 rating under the National Flood Insurance Program’s Community Rating System.

MAYOR PRESENTS POLICE AWARDS

Mayor Stephen R. Reed today gave official recognition to the outstanding efforts of more than 150 city police officers, civilians and other federal, state, county and local law enforcement personnel and K-9’s for actions ranging from saving lives to the capture of armed and dangerous criminal suspects. The annual awards program was begun by the Mayor in the 1980’s as a way for the city to recognize the many contributions to public safety of the city’s police officers, private citizens and others.

NEW TOM SAWYER DINER OPENS ON RESTAURANT ROW; VINTAGE DINER CAR TO FEATURE AMERICAN CUISINE, LIVE ENTERTAINMENT & OUTDOOR MOVIES

Mayor Stephen R. Reed today cut the ribbon to officially open the new Tom Sawyer Diner Entertainment Complex at 210 N. 2nd Street in the heart of downtown’s Restaurant Row. The 1950’s vintage eatery will feature American cuisine, live musical entertainment and outdoor “drive-in” movies during the warmer months.

2 ARSON FIRES UNDER INVESTIGATION

Mayor Stephen R. Reed today reported that State Police, county and city fire marshals are jointly investigating two arson fires that occurred in less than 24 hours in Harrisburg over the weekend.

MAJOR NEW SOUTHERN GATEWAY PLAN UNVEILED BY MAYOR; PROJECT EXPANDS DOWNTOWN AND EASES TRAFFIC CONGESTION

Downtown Harrisburg would be expanded and commuter traffic congestion substantially reduced as part of the major new Southern Gateway redevelopment project, Mayor Stephen R. Reed announced today as he unveiled plans for what could be the one of the largest urban renewal initiatives in state history. The Southern Gateway project was first launched in 2000 to extend S. 3rd Street from Chestnut to Paxton Street, and is now being expanded to include office, retail and residential development.
