CONSTRUCTION ON SOUTH STREET PARKING GARAGE GETS UNDERWAY

Mayor Stephen R. Reed today conducted groundbreaking ceremonies for the new 750-space South Street Parking Garage at 220 South Street in downtown.

Reed said the new 12-story South Street Garage will help to alleviate parking congestion on nearby streets as well as provide space for additional business development and retention. The total cost of the project is $14,193,161, or about $16,200 per space. Reserved spaces will be leased for $165 per month and non- reserved spaces will cost $120 per month. Hourly parking will also be available at standard daily rates ($3 to $18 depending upon length of stay).

The Mayor said construction of the garage is expected to take about 16 months, and should be open for business by July of 2007. Construction manage- ment will be provided by Pyramid Construction Services, with Timothy Haahs & Associates providing architectural and design services. Electrical and mechanical engineering has been performed by Brinjac and Associates.

Reed said the General Contractor for the project is Performance Construction Services, with subcontractors Brayman Caissons, W.G. Tomko- Plumbing, Triangle Fire Protection, Herre Bros.-HVAC and Secco-Electrical also working at the site. Minority firms working on the project include Timothy Haahs and Associates, architect Stanley Womack, attorney Stanley Mitchell, Torain Construction Services, Williams Capital Group, Roland and Roland, The Swathmore Group, Business Builders Worldwide, G.M. Farmer-Electrical, CFI, Inc.-Mechanical, and Jones Masonry.

Additionally working on the project are the women-owned businesses of First Capital insulation, Ida Yeager Sales, Rohr Bckhoe Services, Mechnical Insulation, Accu-Fire Fabrication, Industrial Piping Systems, Inc., and Eagle Steel Inc., said the Mayor.

Reed said the new garage will be open 24-hours per day, 7 days per week, for patrons with special access cards. It will additionally be open for nighttime public use if demand warrants.

“This new facility will help to alleve a substantial, 500-person waiting list for reserved parking in the downtown,” said the Mayor. “Some spaces are already reserved for the Belco Community Credit Union and the Pennsylvania State Education Association.
