DISCARDED CHRISTMAS TREES TO BE COLLECTED BY CITY AT NO CHARGE
Mayor Stephen R. Reed today advised city residents that the City will again provide free pick-up services for discarded Christmas trees throughout the month of January. City crews will follow a street or neighborhood’s normal recycling pick-up day schedule to collect the trees, which residents are directed to place at their front curbside only on the day of their regular recyclable materials collection day.

GAS LINE MELTDOWN FORCES CLOSED STREET, VACATED HOUSES
Mayor Stephen R. Reed this afternoon reported that the 1200 block of Hudson Street in the city’s Cloverly Heights section has been shut down to traffic and various houses cordoned off or vacated, all as a result of an unusual accident.

MAYOR ANNOUNCES CITY HOLIDAY DECORATING & COLORING CONTEST WINNERS
Mayor Stephen R. Reed presented awards to an array of holiday decorating contest winners in the city following their selections by independent judging panels. Included in the awards were winners of the city’s Coloring Contest for city youth, business Wreath Decorations, city government center offices, and Christmas Tree decorating.

Mayor Stephen R. Reed today announced a major new photography exhibition in the City Government Center Atrium. Shot by noted midstate photographer Tom Reider, it will be on display through January and is open to the public during normal business hours.

Weight conscious citizens helped Harrisburg win the top national prize of $25,000 in the Great American Weight Challenge, besting 74 other cities across the nation, Mayor Stephen R. Reed announced today. Sponsored by the national got milk? campaign, the 12-week reduced calorie healthy weight loss plan encouraged Americans to incorporate milk into their daily diets as a means to fight obesity.

CITY TRASH PICK-UPS DELAYED TO SATURDAY; SNOW REMOVAL WORK UNDERWAY CITYWIDE
Mayor Stephen R. Reed this morning announced that all city trash pick-ups have been suspended for the day and will resume tomorrow, Saturday, December 10, meaning that all city trash customers slated for pick-ups today will instead be picked up tomorrow.

CITY TOURISM PUBLIC MEETING POSTPONED TO JANUARY 9 AT HILTON
Mayor Stephen R. Reed this morning announced that the second public meeting on Harrisburg’s comprehensive Tourism Plan, scheduled for this evening at 7:30 p.m. at the Harrisburg Hilton and Towers, has been postponed because of the snowstorm expected to hit the midstate later tonight. The public meeting has been rescheduled to Monday, January 9, at 7:00 p.m., at the Hilton.

CITY 2005 HOLIDAY PARADE WINNERS ANNOUNCED
Saying it was a smashing success, Mayor Stephen R. Reed today reported that the 2005 Harrisburg Holiday Parade was, by far, the largest and longest ever held and that record attendance of over 42,000, by police calculations, lined downtown streets to watch more than 125 parade units, marching bands, floats, giant helium-filled balloons and other groups during the 2 hour, 15 minute event. Nearly 3,000 persons marched in the parade units.
