CITY 2005 HOLIDAY PARADE WINNERS ANNOUNCED

Saying it was a smashing success, Mayor Stephen R. Reed today reported that the 2005 Harrisburg Holiday Parade was, by far, the largest and longest ever held and that record attendance of over 42,000, by police calculations, lined downtown streets to watch more than 125 parade units, marching bands, floats, giant helium-filled balloons and other groups during the 2 hour, 15 minute event. Nearly 3,000 persons marched in the parade units.

The parade is the largest held in Central Pennsylvania and ushers in the Thanksgiving-Hanukkah-Christmas-Kwanzaa-New Year’s Holiday period in the midstate.

The parade was television recorded from beginning to end by ABC27 News and will be rebroadcast on Thanksgiving Day at 10:00 a.m.

Reed reminded that the parade also kicked-off a campaign to send greeting cards to U.S. military personnel who are deployed overseas for the Holiday period.

Signing tables were set-up on the parade route and preprinted cards, to which citizens could affix their names and a message, were collected. Additional message cards are available by contacting the city Dept. of Parks and Recreation at 255.3020. The cards will be delivered before Christmas to military personnel in Iraq and Afghanistan.
