DISTINCTIVE NEW ALVARO BREAD & PASTRY SHOP OPENS ON PEFFER ST.

Mayor Stephen R. Reed today cut the ribbon to officially open the distinctive new Alvaro Bread and Pastry Shop at 236 Peffer Street in the city’s north midtown. The unique Italian-style bakery offers a full range of bakery products, pizzas and coffees.

Reed said the new eatery is owned and operated by Italian immigrants Sal and Lina Alvaro, who bring several generations of “Old World” Italian baking experience to the new city-based venture.

The Mayor said the Alvaros undertook an extensive restoration of the 1,400 sq. ft. shop and performed all of the work themselves. Three new full and part time jobs are created by the new bakery’s opening.

Reed said the distinctive new culinary attraction offers delectable breads, cookies and pastries, as well as pizzas, coffees and teas. The shop is currently take- out only, but will be offering in-shop dining in the coming months.

The Mayor said the Alvaro Bread and Pastry Shop is open 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays, and can be reached at (717) 238.1999, or via fax order at 236.1476.

Reed said: “This is a splendid neighborhood based bakery shop that harkens back to a much earlier time when, throughout the cities of America, this type of shop existed in many a neighborhood. We are delighted to see this long proven retail specialty technique return. It underscores the number of opportunities for similar ventures, involving many different products and services, to do the same in this city.”

The Mayor noted the bakery is easily accessed from major streets, including N. 2nd, N. Front and Maclay Streets, and is less than a block from the Governor’s Residence.
