NIGERIAN SOCIETY DINNER TO RAISE FUNDS FOR PLANNED NIGERIAN COMMUNITY CULTURAL CENTER

Mayor Stephen R. Reed is slated to be the keynote speaker for The Nigerian Society of South Central Pennsylvania’s annual fundraising dinner, set for Saturday,October 1, at the Radisson Penn Harris Convention Center in Camp Hill. The dinner begins at 8:00 p.m. and proceeds will be used to help establish a Nigerian Community Cultural Center in Harrisburg.

Reed said the Nigerian Society of South Central Pennsylvania was formed 11 years ago to assist recent Nigerian and other African nation immigrants to the midstate. The organization is comprised of mostly persons in various professions who come from Nigeria and other African nations, and in the past has raised funds for the Sickle Cell Council of the Capital Region, the Boys and Girls Club of Central Pennsylvania and the SBI Business School at John Harris High School.

The Mayor said the fundraising dinner coincides with the 45th Anniversary of the Independence of Nigeria, which was one of the first African nations to attain independence from their former colonial powers. Nigeria remains one of the African continents more successful democracies in the decades since.

Reed said the Nigerian Society is currently embarked upon a major capital campaign to raise funds for the purchase and operation of a full time Nigerian Community Cultural Center in Harrisburg. The Center will provide arts, music, language and other cultural and social programs geared toward the overall African immigrant community. A site for the planned center will later be identified.

The Mayor said tickets to the dinner are still available by calling (717) 557.3364.
