M&T BANK PARTNERS WITH CITY FOR FOURTH CONSECUTIVE YEAR TO PRESENT NEW YEAR’S EVE CELEBRATION

Mayor Stephen R. Reed today announced that M&T Bank will once again partner with the city in presenting the popular M&T Bank New Year’s Eve Celebration, set for Saturday, December 31, beginning at 9 p.m. in Market Square. This marks the fourth consecutive year that M&T Bank has partnered with the city to present the region’s largest and most popular New Year’s Eve Celebration, which features live entertainment, fireworks and children’s entertainment.

Reed said the City of Harrisburg, which organizes and conducts the annual event, is very pleased to have M&T Bank’s continued commitment as title sponsor for the event. M&T Bank employs more than 3,000 workers in central and southern Pennsylvania at more than 100 branch offices.

“In these times of financial uncertainty for many regional events, the ability of the City of Harrisburg to secure financial support underscores the promotional and community value of these events to the corporate world,” Reed said. “The commitment by M&T Bank illustrates their strong commitment to the Capital Region and the quality of life we provide.” The Mayor noted that corporate sponsorships currently fund most of the City’s annual special events.

“A healthy and vibrant downtown is important for our entire region,” said M&T Bank regional President Michael S. Murchie. “We look forward to working with the City of Harrisburg on this fantastic event, which brings thousands of visitors to downtown. M&T Bank also sponsors many other city events and activities, including the highly successful Titanic exhibition which recently drew more than 52,000 visitors to the Whitaker Center for Science and the Arts.

Reed said this year’s New Year’s Eve celebration will take place on Market Square, inside the city government center, and at numerous other downtown locations. The popular M&T Bank Investment Firm Children’s Theater will once again be located in the lobby of the city government center. “Make plans to bring the whole family,” said the Mayor, “as activities are geared to both youngsters and adults.”

The free event, which celebrates the end of 2005 and the start of 2006, features live music, food, children’s entertainment and an array of other events and activities, all of which conclude at Midnight with the descent of a giant, lighted strawberry and a grand finale fireworks display high above Market Square.

For more information on the M&T Bank New Year’s Eve Celebration, the Mayor said interested parties may visit the city’s special events website at www.HarrisburgEvents.com, or call the Department of Parks and Recreation at (717) 255.3020.
