Harrisburg Young Professionals Announce Scholarships for Harrisburg University Students

To celebrate the incoming 2005 Pioneer Class at Harrisburg University, the Harrisburg Young Professionals today presented Harrisburg University (HU) with seven $500 scholarships. The scholarships will go toward providing laptop computers for Harrisburg Sci-Tech High School graduates who will attend the new four-year university. For each year after, HYP will award three $500 scholarships to incoming students from the City of Harrisburg through its scholarship foundation.

“We hope these awards will help enrich the lives of deserving young students, as well as provide them with an opportunity to stay in Harrisburg after graduation,” said HYP President David La Torre. “HYP has always made Brain Gain one of our top priorities because Harrisburg has some of the brightest young students in the nation. HYP looks forward to playing a pivotal role in helping to mentor each student and assist him or her in finding job opportunities here after receiving their diplomas from Harrisburg University.

“On behalf of the HYP Board, I would like to thank Team PA Foundation for its continued strong support of our scholarship foundation. Without Team PA and President Rich Hudic, this commitment could not have been possible. I would also like to thank past HYP President Alex Hartzler, local businessman Rick Galiardo and all of our members for giving so graciously to help HU’s Pioneer Class.”

“HYP would like to commend Mayor Stephen R. Reed for his continued commitment to the City of Harrisburg. A new university hasn’t been created from scratch in more than a century in Pennsylvania. No one thought Harrisburg could pull this off, but Mayor Reed has once again proven his doubters wrong. This fall, Harrisburg University’s first class will begin its studies. We would also to commend Harrisburg University President Dr. Mel Schiavelli, Board President David Shankweiler and all members of the HU Board for their outstanding leadership.”
