HARRISBURG RECEIVES TOP NATIONAL BUDGETING AWARD FOR 14TH YEARMayor Stephen R. Reed today reported that the City of Harrisburg has received the top national award for budgeting, for the 14th consecutive year, and is one of only 4 municipalities of the 2,566 municipalities in Pennsylvania to do so. The recognition, known as the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award, is conferred by the Government Finance Officers’ Association, based in Chicago, which has set high standards for the award – standards which exceed the normal requirements for budgetary documents and processes. Reed said he required the city to adhere to the higher standards many years ago so that Harrisburg’s financial management would be a role model. Any governmental entity receiving the Award is reviewed by an independent panel of public finance experts, who examine every aspect of budgetary documents and information. Separately, Harrisburg has received this year the highest national award for financial reporting and accounting, known as the Certificate of Achievement for Financial Reporting. Harrisburg is one of only four to achieve both national financial awards. “Taxpayers need to know that their government takes seriously the manage-ment and accountability of their taxdollars. This is our policy here but the only way to independently verify this is to ascribe to these higher standards, which we do as a matter of annual routine,” Reed said. |
