OVER A HALF-MILLION DOLLARS COMMITTED TO HOMELESS, HUMAN SERVICES AND AFFORDABLE HOUSING
Mayor Stephen R. Reed today announced that $549,631 in funds have been issued to further support homeless services, human services and the further creation of affordable housing for persons and families of limited income. It is part of the city’s overall residential development program.

FOUNDERS OF FRIENDS OF JAZZ RECOGNIZED BY MAYOR TODAY; 25TH ANNUAL JAZZ FESTIVAL SLATED FOR THIS WEEKEND AT HILTON HOTEL
Mayor Stephen R. Reed recognized the extraordinary efforts of four mid State men who served as founders of the respected Central Pennsylvania Friends of Jazz (CPFJ) organization twenty-five years ago, and have since guided it into one of the nation’s foremost jazz performance clubs. The recognitions kicked off the CPFJ’s 25th Annual Commerce Bank Central PA Jazz Festival, being held at the Harrisburg Hilton and Towers this weekend, June 9-12.

DELOITTE ANNOUNCES “DAY OFF” FOR GLOBAL IMPACT DAY; VOLS TO PERFORM COMMUNITY SERVICE WORK IN S. ALLISON HILL
Mayor Stephen R. Reed today announced that the internationally recognized Deloitte and Touche USA LLP, will conduct a volunteer clean-up campaign in South Allison Hill on Friday, June 3, as part of the firm’s international “Global IMPACT Day”. The daylong volunteer event will realize nearly 240,000 hours of volunteer service by the firm’s 30,000 employees worldwide.

CITY AND HARRISBURG ACORN TEAM-UP TO PROVIDE OVER $600,000 IN TAX REFUNDS TO CITY RESIDENTS; HOUSING & LENDING FAIR SET FOR JUNE 4TH
Mayor Stephen R. Reed and Harrisburg Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now(ACORN) local head organizer Ben Hanna today announced that 647 city residents have received a total of $608,066 in federal tax refunds as a result of the innovative IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assis- tance Program, which was conducted by ACORN and largely cosponsored by the City of Harrisburg.

15% SAVED ON NATURAL GAS SUPPLY THROUGH CITY PROGRAM
Mayor Stephen R. Reed today reported that the city’s natural gas bulk supply purchasing program saved the city and other program participants 15% or $532,000 in 2004, an increase over the year 2003 when 11% were realized.

Suspect Arrested In Stabbing Death Of City Women
Mayor Stephen R. Reed today announced that Harrisburg Police have arrested 44-year old Steven Bullock, of the 1400 block of S. 14th Street, for the early Wednesday morning stabbing death of 39-year old Catherine Jones. Bullock is now in custody on the charge of Criminal Homicide and related charges.

40 Arrested In City Undercover Drug Sales Enforcment Effort : 112 Counts Lodged So Far In Ongoing Investigation
Mayor Stephen R. Reed today announced that Harrisburg Police have arrested 40 drug sales suspects on more than 112 counts as a result of an intensive undercover drug sales enforcement operation that has been underway since March of this year. The operation was highlighted by the arrests of several New York and Philadelphia dealers who controlled the flow of heroin into South Harrisburg.

FORMER FARM SHOW DIRECTOR TO HEAD CITY OFFICE OF SPECIAL PROJECTS
– Mayor Stephen R. Reed today announced that former state Farm Show Complex Director Edward Nielsen has been hired to head up the Mayor’s Office of Special Projects for the City of Harrisburg. Nielsen begins his duties on Monday, May 23.

MAYOR PRESENTS POLICE AWARDS
– Mayor Stephen R. Reed today gave official recognition to the outstanding efforts of more than 145 city police officers, citizens, public employees and others for actions ranging from saving lives to the capture of armed and dangerous criminal suspects. The awards program was begun by the Mayor in the 1980’s as a way for the city to recognize the many contributions to public safety of the city’s police officers, private citizens and others.

Governor Edward G. Rendell today presented $15 million in Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program (RACP) funds to the City of Harrisburg for the construction of the first permanent location that will house the Harrisburg University of Science and Technology. The 100,000-square-foot facility will serve as a one-of-a-kind educational institution, as well as an important economic development resource for the Capitol Region and the Commonwealth.
