ILLEGAL TRUCK, BOAT & TRAILER PARKING FINES RAISED TO $250.00

Mayor Stephen today announced that fines for the illegal parking of tractor-trailer trucks, boats, motor homes and other trailers on city streets has been increased to $250.00 per citation. Previous fines were only $15.00.

Reed said the increase was recently passed by City Council and signed into law by the mayor after the city had received an extensive number of complaints about on-street neighborhood parking spaces being taken up by large vehicles. City ordinance prohibits the parking of such vehicles or trailers in residential areas, but the minimal fine for doing so proved no deterrent.

“The simple truth is these large vehicles take away vehicular parking spaces for residents,” said the Mayor. “A tractor-trailer truck alone can take up four or five normal car parking spaces, while boat and other trailers can occupy as many as two or three spaces. With the limited number of on-street spaces available in our neighborhoods, this becomes a major point of contention for residents who are forced to park blocks away from their homes. This is a public nuisance and those who engage in this inconsiderate conduct need to be taught that this practice is unacceptable.”

City law and parking enforcement officers have been instructed to give attention to such violations when they are observed, and provide citations to offenders.

The Mayor said under no circumstances are any tractor-trailers supposed to be parking on city residential streets. Owners of boats, motor homes or other large trailers are encouraged to find suitable parking for their vehicles at off-street lots or in monthly storage lots, rather than on city streets.
