PA PUMP PRIMERS PRESENTS MAYOR WITH 2005 PRESIDENT’S AWARD; CITY FIRE & PARKS AND RECREATION AGENCIES ALSO RECOGNIZED

Mayor Stephen R. Reed was honored today by the Pennsylvania Pump Primers Association with their 2005 President’s Award, in recognition of the support the Mayor has provided the group over the years. Also recognized by the group was the city Department of Parks and Recreation, and the Harrisburg Bureau of Fire, for their support and assistance to the annual event.

Reed said the Pump Primers, also known as the Central Pennsylvania Chapter for the Society for the Preservation and Appreciation of Motorized Fire Apparatus in America, annually present the magnificent Pennsylvania International Pump Primers Muster in Riverfront Park, which marks its 30th Anniversary at this year’s July 9th event.

The Mayor said the Central Pa Pump Primers event is considered one of the finest in the world, and draws firefighting aficionados from around the world. More than 116,000 competitors and spectators have attended the popular salute to firefighting, with entries coming from 28 states and 4 foreign countries.

Pump Primers President James R. Derstine said he was “very pleased to offer small tokens of the Pump Primers appreciation for all that the Mayor and his employees have done for the event, which has now grown into one of the top such competitions and gatherings in the world. The status our event now enjoys is in no small measure due to the wonderful cooperation and support we receive in Harrisburg.”

The Mayor lauded the work of the Pump Primers in helping keep the rich heritage of firefighting alive and accessible to the general public, and for helping bring thousands of tourists into the city each year: “The Pump Primers Muster is

unlike anything else held in the midstate,” said Reed, “and its longevity is due in large part to the good work of the many dozens of organizers and others who annually sacrifice countless hours so that others may enjoy themselves.”

Reed said this year’s Pump Primers Muster will be held on Saturday, July 9 in Riverfront Park from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. For more information on the Pump Primers Muster please contact the Central Pennsylvania Chapter for the Society for the Preservation and Appreciation of Motorized Fire Apparatus in America at (717) 566.8973.
