SUSPECT, ON BAIL FOR ROBBERY, ARRESTED AGAIN FOR BANK ROBBERY; ADMITS TO TWO OTHER BANK ROBBERIES AFTER CAPTUREHarrisburg, PA—Mayor Stephen R. Reed today reported that the Waypoint Bank at 235 N. 2nd Street downtown was robbed by a lone robber at 10:30 a.m. this morning. Within minutes the suspect was caught and arrested and all the stolen money was recovered. Bank employees reported that the suspect was in the bank and then left, only to return shortly thereafter and then jumped over the counter to take money from a teller station. He then jumped over a locked office gate and left through the bank’s Pine Street exit. No weapon was displayed. No injuries occurred. Police fanned out in the downtown looking for the suspect, based on a clear description provided by witnesses. A county deputy sheriff spotted a man of the same description at Green and Briggs Streets. Bank staff positively identified him as the robber. Arrested is Timothy Barnes, 48, of the first block of N. 17th Street, who is charged with one count of robbery. He was already out on bail on earlier robbery charges and, during interrogation with city police, admitted to not only the Waypoint Bank robbery but two other bank robberies that very recently occurred, one in Susquehanna Township and another at a bank branch inside the Weis Market in Selinsgrove. Reed said: “This is yet another case example of the frustration experienced with habitual criminals remaining on the streets. They continue to prey upon the community. The criminal justice system needs to improve its capacity to protect citizens and property from those who threaten both by their repetitive criminal conduct.” XXX |
