S. FRONT STREET SINKHOLE IN SHIPOKE REPAIRED; NORMAL TRAFFIC PATTERNS RESUMEHarrisburg, PA—Mayor Stephen R. Reed this afternoon announced that repairs have been completed to a sinkhole underneath the 500 block of S. Front Street in Shipoke, and that normal traffic patterns have resumed. Work had been expected to take up to several weeks, but crews were able to quickly repair the damage and reopen the street. Reed said underground water damage from Tropical Storm Ivan caused an eight-foot section of concrete stormwater drainage pipe to deteriorate, resulting in the washout of the ground around it and creating a large void that threatened to undermine a ten-foot square section of S. Front Street above it. Directed by the Mayor to work on an expedited basis, contracted city crews were able to excavate the site, replace the broken pipe, backfill the void and temporarily repave the street within 48 hours, days ahead what had been anticipated. The expedited work prevented serious traffic disruption for Shipoke residents and visitors, which had threatened to cause the redirection of motorists to Sycamore Street to exit the neighborhood. “We are very pleased that damage was not more extensive and that repairs were able to be completed so quickly,” said the Mayor. “Our appreciation is appropriately extended to the city’s contracted repair firm of Rogele Inc. for their diligence and dedication in getting the work done so fast, and with so little negative impact upon the residents of Shipoke.” Reed said the cost of the S. Front Street repair work is yet to be determined, and that additional repair work will be taking place in various locations throughout the city in coming weeks for similar Tropical Storm Ivan damage to city streets and sewage and stormwater conveyance systems. Repair work also continues on City Island, which sustained heavy flood damage from the mid-September storm. XXX |
