Homicide Suspect Ishaq Lewis Captured by City Police

Mayor Stephen R. Reed this evening reported that Homicide suspect Ishaq Abdule Lewis, age 22, was arrested without incident today by Harrisburg City Police. Lewis has been sought since September 30 in connection with the fatal shooting of Christopher E. McDonald, age 22, as well as the shooting of Derrick A. McDonald, 18, and Ryan J. Strain, 23.

Sinkhole Repair to Close Portion of S. Front Street in Shipoke for up to 2 Weeks; Two-Way Traffic to be Temporarily Permitted dor Local Resident Egress on Remainder of S. Front Street to Sycamore Street

Mayor Stephen R. Reed today said flood recovery work continues in the city and one of the projects will deal with underground water damage from the Tropical Storm Ivan flood that caused a large sinkhole to develop in the 500 block of S. Front Street in the Shipoke neighborhood, which will cause the temporary closure of a section of the street while repairs are made, Mayor Stephen R. Reed announced today. Work will begin Monday, November 1, and could take as long as several weeks depending upon the extent of damage. Two-way traffic will be permitted on the remainder of S. Front Street, from the 500 block south to Nagle Street during the closure so that Shipoke residents and visitors can exit the neighborhood to Sycamore Street.

City Lead Poisoning Prevention Program Picked For $3 Million In Federal Funding

Mayor Stephen R. Reed today announced that more than 200 homes have been renovated, 45 of them in the past 12 months, under Harrisburg’s award winning lead poisoning prevention program. This week marks the city’s annual observance of Lead Paint Hazard Week, with activities today at Foose Elementary School, 1301 Sycamore Street in South Harrisburg.

‘Perks N’bribes’ Gift Shop Under New Management

Mayor Stephen R. Reed today conducted the grand re-opening of the popular Perks N’ Bribes gift and card shop located at 225 N. 2nd Street in downtown. The unique retailer was recently purchased by noted midstate entrepreneur David Ferris.

City Trick Or Treat Night Set For Thursday, October 28, From 6:00 P.M. To 8:00 P.M.

Mayor Stephen R. Reed today announced that Trick or Treat Night in Harrisburg and most of Dauphin County’s other communities will be held on Thursday, October 28, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The date and time for the fun-filled evening is annually set by the Dauphin County Chiefs of Police.

Police Officer Arrested On Crack Cocaine-Related Charges

Mayor Stephen R. Reed and Dauphin County District Attorney Edward Marsico today announced the arrest of John D. Evans, 43, of Elizabeth-town, Lancaster County, a 12-year veteran of the Harrisburg Police Bureau, on 69 criminal counts related to the theft and use of crack cocaine, including instances involving the removal of evidence from criminal case files.

Congressman Holden Delivers $642,590 In Federal Funds For City Police And Public Education

Congressman Tim Holden (17th) today presented funds totaling $642,590 for the Harrisburg School District. The funds include $400,000 from the U.S. Department of Education’s Smaller Learning Communities Program, and $242,590 from the federal COPS Secure Our Schools program for increasing security at public schools.

Riverside School Renamed In Honor Of City Native T. Morris Chester, Famed African American Civil War-Era Journalist, Attorney And Civil Rights Activist

One of Harrisburg’s most famous African American forefathers was recognized today by Mayor Stephen R. Reed and the Harrisburg School District as the Riverside Elementary School at 3219 Green Street was renamed the Thomas Morris Chester School, Mayor Reed today announced. Joining the Mayor and school district officials in the formal dedication ceremonies were surviving descendants of the famed journalist, attorney and early civil rights leader.
