FLOOD RECOVERY, DAMAGE ASSESSMENTS CONTINUE, SEMINAR FOR FLOOD VICTIMS SET FOR WEDNESDAY; HEALTH ADVISORY ISSUEDHarrisburg, PA—Mayor Stephen R. Reed today reported that flood recovery, clean-up, and repair construction activities are fully underway in all flood zones, and the pace will likely pick-up even further this weekend when most flood victims are free of their regular employment duties. A seminar for flood victims is set for next Wednesday, Sept. 29, at 6:30 p.m. in the Atrium of City Government Center on Market Square. Attorneys from the Dauphin County Bar Association will explain details about insurance claims and the law and will answer flood victims’ questions. The seminar is free and open to all residents. Reed issued a health advisory for those working on flood recovery activities indoors and outdoors. Multiple cases of advanced dehydration have occurred in the past 48 hours, involving persons with such symptoms as chest pains, debilitating dizziness, and extreme fatigue. In addition to drinking water regularly, a supplement like Gatorade should also be consumed to restore electrolyte balances in the body that are otherwise lost when sweating and working in warm temperatures. As damage assessments continue, the extent of damage and loss on the northern half of City Island has been found to be “worse than initially expected.” It will take at least a month for all the electricity to be restored in some areas there. The northern half of the Island remains closed to the public and many crews are working on debris removal, repair and related work. Scheduled events on City Island in the next several weeks will be affected and some will have to be cancelled or moved to alternate sites. The Harrisburg riverboat, the Pride of the Susquehanna, has returned to City Island from the southern tip of City Island, where it was anchored to ride out the flood. The riverboat docks have been destroyed at City Island, and major damage to the riverboat building occurred. The boat is tied-up opposite the replica John Harris Trading Post, which unfortunately does not allow public access, so riverboat functions are postponed until further notice. In Shipoke, where at least six properties sustained major structural damage due to the collapse of basement walls between row homes, the temporary condemnation notices have been cancelled because temporary reshoring of the homes in the basements has been put into place by private contractors, thus preventing the structures from potentially crumbling or collapsing. The Boil Water Advisory for Harrisburg Water System customers was cancelled at 11:00 a.m. today and customers can resume normal water usage. XXX |
