THE OFFICE OF MAYOR STEPHEN R. REED |
FOR IMMEDIATE USE |
DOWNTOWN STREET TO BE CLOSED FOR REMOVAL OF 20-STORY CRANEHarrisburg, PA – Mayor Stephen R. Reed today announced that the first block of N. Second Street, from Market to Walnut Streets, will be temporarily closed to traffic during the evenings next week to accommodate the removal of the large crane being used at the Market Square Plaza construction site in downtown. Reed said the street will close from 6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. each night beginning on Monday, July 26, through Thursday, July 29. The street will reopen each day at 6:00 a.m. to accommodate morning commuter traffic. The affected block of N. Second Street will close again on Saturday morning, July 31, from 5:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and, depending upon their progress, may be required to close again on Sunday morning, August 1, from 5:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The Mayor said the removal of the twenty-story crane should be completed by August 1 at the latest, with normal traffic routes resuming thereafter. Reed said the crane, an engineering marvel used to lift beams and heavy panels into place, greatly accelerates conventional construction projects. The crane’s operation on Market Square has been the source of much curiosity, as many citizens have taken time to watch it at work. Its use is now over, because the building’s superstructure and façade are fully in place, and interior finishing work is now underway. The new 18-story addition to the city skyline opens next year.
