CITY WEBSITE CHOSEN AS STATE’S DESTINATION OF THE DAY

Harrisburg, PA—The City of Harrisburg website at www.harrisburgcity.com has been selected as Pennsylvania’s Web Destination of the Day by the About Pennsylvania Internet site run by Kessler Freedman Inc., Mayor Stephen R. Reed today announced. Considered one of the most extensive municipal websites in the nation, Harrisburg’s internet site has had more than 528,000 visits since its official launch in mid-2002.

“We are delighted with today’s recognition of the city website,” said Mayor Reed. “Harrisburg has invested substantial resources in the development of our web presence to better serve our citizens, and to increase awareness of the city around the globe. We have one of the most comprehensive municipal websites in the nation today, far exceeding that of even cities many times our size.

“Plus we are considered one of the most accessible websites in the country for persons with visual or other disabilities, allowing for easy access and navigation of the site, regardless of a visitor’s specific limitations.”

The Mayor said Harrisburg’s website allows visitors to easily access the entire range of city services and activities. Internet users can download job applications online, inquire about and download permits, learn about business and residential opportunities, check out meeting and special event schedules, and learn about a wide range of city activities, projects and more.

Plans for the future include live webcasting, or streaming, of city government meetings and activities on the website, in conjunction with the Harrisburg Broadcast Network and the city’s new municipal television station, WHGB Cable Channel 20.

Reed lauded the work of the city’s first-ever fulltime webmaster, Timothy Stone, who has designed and built the site, and the city Department of Administration, directed by city Business Administrator Linda Lingle, who has primary responsibility and oversight for the city’s data processing operations.
