VOTE “YES” ON MAY 17th BALLOT QUESTION URGED

Mayor Stephen R. Reed today announced that Harrisburg Police have arrested 44-year old Steven Bullock, of the 1400 block of S. 14th Street, for the early Wednesday morning stabbing death of 39-year old Catherine Jones. Bullock is now in custody on the charge of Criminal Homicide and related charges.

The Mayor said the incident unfolded around 3:30 a.m. on Wednesday morning, May 18, when witnesses in the 1100 block of Magnolia Street heard a woman screaming from a car parked nearby. Police believe the victim was at the home of the suspect that night and early morning, prior to the stabbing. At least one witness observed a male entering a white vehicle and drive off. Unfortunately, witnesses did not report the incident at the time and waited until 7 a.m. to call police. A large pool of blood and a slipper were then discovered near the spot where the car had been sighted.

Last evening city police received a report of a missing woman, 39-year old Catherine Jones, of the 2200 block N. Third Street in uptown Harrisburg. Jones had a long time relationship with Bullock.

Police quickly zeroed in Bullock and conducted an intensive search overnight to locate him. He turned himself into police this morning and admitted stabbing Jones to death at the Magnolia Street location and dumping her body off of Route 382 near Interstate 83 South in Newberry Township, York County. Bullock helped police locate the body late this morning.

Reed said Bullock then discarded his clothing and other evidence at various locations throughout the city, which police are currently investigating. Search crews are in the field looking for items, and the murder weapon has yet to be found. Bullock will be arraigned on formal charges later this afternoon and remanded to Dauphin County Prison on no bail.

Reed said police have been working on the case around-the-clock.

The vehicle thought used in the incident was found by police last night and is registered to a niece of the suspect.

Since the victim’s body was found in York County, the coroners’ offices of both York and Dauphin Counties will have to work jointly on the case, as will law enforcement agencies of Harrisburg and Newberry Township.
