CITY RECEIVES TOP NATIONAL AWARD FOR FINANCIAL REPORTING AND ACCOUNTING FOR 17TH CONSECUTIVE YEAR
Mayor Stephen R. Reed today reported that the City of Harrisburg has received the top award in the United States and Canada for financial reporting and accounting. Known as the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting, it is the 17th consecutive year that Harrisburg has received the recognition from the Government Finance Officers’ Association, an organization based in Chicago and Washington D.C. and which has set high standards for governmental financial management. Stephen Gauthier, spokesperson for the Association, said: “The Certificate of Achievement is the highest form of recognition in the area of governmental accounting and financial reporting and its attainment represents a significant achievement by a government and its management.” The award designation occurs only after an independent review by financial experts who serve on impartial panels who review submissions from governmental agencies. Separately, the city has received the top national award for budgeting, known as the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award, for the 14th consecutive year. The two recognitions are the highest awards in the country for financial operations. Of the 2,566 municipalities in Pennsylvania, only 3 have received both in the past year. -- more -- Reed said: “The taxpayers deserve to know exactly how their money is spent. We have set standards higher than those required for a conventional financial audit. By adhering to these higher standards, we achieve a higher level of accountability and keep in place a performance level by which Harrisburg shall perform in the future.” The awards in the past 17 and 14 years are the first that Harrisburg has ever achieved the status of national recognition for financial reporting, accounting and budgeting. |
