VOTE “YES” ON MAY 17th BALLOT QUESTION URGED
Mayor Stephen R. Reed today urged voters to vote “yes” on the ballot question that will appear on the Primary Election ballot on May 17th. Voters across Pennsylvania must decide whether to approve the state issuing a total of $625 million in bonds, which would be used solely for protection of the environment, open space and farmland preservation, watershed protection, abandoned mine reclamation, acid mine drainage clean-up and related environmental projects. The overall program is known as Growing Greener II and both the Governor and state Legislature approved of it being placed on the ballot as a question on which citizens could vote. Under Pennsylvania’s Constitution, the bonds cannot be issued unless voters first approve. Reed said: “The ballot question should be approved because it offers a comprehensive and significant advancement in the efforts to improve the environment throughout our state. It takes money to do this. It benefits all communities in different ways. Even farmland and open space preservation, while seemingly not pertaining to Harrisburg, actually impacts us as it would help redirect the forces of growth to the areas more appropriate for future development, including our cities and older towns, while preserving our state’s number one industry – agriculture.” |
