THE OFFICE OF MAYOR STEPHEN R. REED |
FOR IMMEDIATE USE |
SUSPECT ARRESTED IN DOWNTOWN GARAGE MURDERMayor Stephen R. Reed this afternoon announced that Harrisburg Police have arrested 27-year old Kareem George in connection with the fatal shooting of Donnell Haith on December 20, 2002. Haith, 27, was shot to death at the River Street Garage following an earlier altercation at a downtown nightclub. Reed said George was identified as the primary suspect shortly after the incident and has been the subject of a continuing search since. George fled the area to New York where he was finally arrested on a parole violation on January 6, 2005. He was returned to Pennsylvania in late January and has now been formally charged with Criminal Homicide, Reckless Endangerment and related weapons counts. He will be arraigned in night court and returned to the Camp Hill State Prison on no bail. The Mayor said the incident occurred shortly after midnight on December 22 following an altercation between two groups of young men that included Haith and George. George followed Haith into the parking garage at 218 N. 2nd Street and killed him with a single gunshot to the chest. The 9-mm weapon used in the murder has not been recovered. Although police had earlier identified George as a possible suspect, continuing police investigation into the case helped bring forth additional witnesses who have positively identified George as the shooter, allowing for the formal filing of homicide charges |
