CITY TV SHOW TAKES TOP HONORS IN INTERNATIONAL COMPETITIONHarrisburg’s WHBG Cable Channel 20 has taken top honors in international competition, Mayor Stephen R. Reed said today in announcing the city’s receipt of the prestigious Award of Distinction from the international Communicator Awards-2004 Video Competition. The award was presented for a telemarketing fraud episode of the city-produced “The Smart Consumer” public affairs show, which is hosted by Harrisburg attorney Rick Hicks. Reed said the award announced today is the first-ever independent recognition for original programming produced by the city’s cable television station, which competed against nearly 3,000 other entries from 48 states and 7 countries. The Mayor said the Smart Consumer episode that was submitted to the international governing body was judged by “an independent group of industry professionals, who look for submissions that set a high standard of excellence and serve as benchmarks for the industry.” “We are delighted with the receipt of this prestigious award and extend our appreciation to midstate attorney and show host Rick Hicks, Harrisburg Broadcast Network Executive Director Chad Edwards and the many others involved in producing The Smart Consumer, as well as our many other locally-produced television programs,” said Mayor Reed. “Harrisburg is on the cutting edge of locally-produced community broadcasting and this award certainly underscores that distinction.” “The Smart Consumer” and the city’s many other locally-produced cable television programs, as well as government meetings of the Harrisburg City Council, Penbrook Borough Council, and Lower Paxton and Susquehanna Townships’ Boards of Supervisors can be seen on WHBG TV-20 on the Comcast Cable – Harrisburg Region system.
