REED APPOINTS NEW SPECIAL EVENTS DIRECTOR FOR CITYMayor Stephen R. Reed has appointed Charles A. Schulz as Special Events Director for the City of Harrisburg, filling a position that has been vacant since November 2004. Mayor Reed said that the Department of Parks and Recreation received over 200 applications for the position. Mr. Schulz previously served as Communications Officer for the city’s Department of Building and Housing Development. He is a veteran publicist and entertainment and events producer with a long track record of success in the creative management of local and statewide venues. Schulz has produced large-scale meetings, events, exhibitions and fundraising galas for the Art Association of Harrisburg, the PA Motor Truck Association, the PA Society of Professional Engineers, the Sheet Metal and Air Conditioning National Contractor’s Assn. and the State Museum of Pennsylvania, to name a few. He has served as the chief executive officer of the Art Association of Harrisburg and Midtown Market District, where he was responsible for the final design and opening of the Midtown Cinema in the Reily Midtown Center. He was also the co-founder of the highly successful Midtown Multicultural Festival.Charles Schulz is active with Habitat for Humanity, a member of the Friends of the State Museum of Pennsylvania, an honorary-life member of the Art Assn. of Harrisburg, a past president of the Harrisburg Jaycees, a past member of the Greater Harrisburg Arts Council Board of Directors and has recently been elected to the Executive Committee of the NAACP of Greater Harrisburg. Mayor Reed said the duties of the Special Events Director will be to continue the rich tradition of quality that has been established for all city events; increase corporate sponsorships to expand the scope of the events; present new and varied talent and superior spectacle for the entertainment of Harrisburg’s citizens, visitors and guests. The Mayor said that the wide array of Harrisburg’s special events, such as the American Musicfest, Italian Lake Concert Series, Kipona Celebration, Holiday Parade and New Year’s Eve Celebration represent more than free public entertainment. City-sponsored events provide wholesome family fun and raise the level of citizen awareness of the arts, music and dance. In addition to the public benefit, events are a significant part of the mayor’s economic development plan for the entire city, bringing thousands of people and tens of millions of dollars in economic impact to Harrisburg every year. |
