RECREATION BUREAU

The Bureau of Recreation proudly offers year-round recreation programming for the City of Harrisburg stressing the holistic approach to self improvement, teaching youth to improve both their minds and bodies through positive, fun-filled, educational, arts, cultural, and sports and fitness related programming. This programming exposes inner-city youth, in particular, to experiences that broaden their horizons and build their confidence and self-esteem; thus, setting the stage for their development into positive, motivated, young adults.

Both traditional sports programs and new activities have been developed with specific goals in mind that will continue to offer safe, positive, fun-filled educational, and culturally-diverse activities at clean, attractive, well-maintained facilities either completely free or at a very minimal cost. These popular sports programs include: swimming, tennis, basketball, soccer camps and leagues, junior golf, and Life Guard certification classes. Although our main focus is on developing youth, adult programs are also available, such as our Adult Fitness Classes.

In addition to the traditional games, sports and fitness activities many other activities and programs are also offered such as fishing, pier mediation; adventure camps; cooking, mural painting, cheerleading, Drama, Dance, Drumming and Life Skills for youth of varying ages and ethnic backgrounds, whether they resided in the City or not.

Black History Enrichment SeriesOne of the most important Recreation Bureau programs is the "Black History Enrichment Series." This multi-disciplinary series reaches out to 10,000 Harrisburg City youth through after-school programs, summer enrichment camps, weekday and weekend activity sessions and during City sponsored festivals. The series begins in January with the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Essay Competition, highlights Black History Month in February with a variety of events and continues throughout the year offering many unique opportunities for youth to learn about the heritage, art forms, skills, and knowledge of African Americans past and present. The series is sponsored by the The Black History Month Gala held each year in February.
